File tools
Checksums, split and combine, attributes, image conversion and PDF tools. They are in the Commands menu and in the command palette (⇧⌘P).
Checksums§
Create Checksum Files§
Mark files and choose Commands › Create Checksum Files…. Choose the algorithm: CRC32 (.sfv), MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 (the default) or SHA-512.
- With one file, or with One file for all off, each file gets its own checksum file next to it:
photo.jpg.sha256. - With One file for all (the default for several files), one file
checksums.sha256in the current folder lists them all with relative paths.
The files use the format of md5sum and sha256sum (SFV for CRC32), so other tools can check them. Folders are skipped. An existing checksum file is never replaced.
Verify Checksums§
Put the cursor on a checksum file (.sfv, .md5, .sha1, .sha256, .sha512) and choose Commands › Verify Checksums. PaneShift reads every listed file and reports “All 12 files are OK”, or which files differ, are missing or can't be read.
Split and combine files§
Split File§
Put the cursor on a file and choose Commands › Split File…. Enter the part size: 100M, 4095M for FAT32 disks, 700M for a CD or 1440K. The parts go to the other panel's folder as name.001, name.002…, with a name.crc file that records the original name, size and checksum, as in Total Commander.
Combine Files§
Put the cursor on the first part (name.001) and choose Commands › Combine Files. The parts are joined into the other panel's folder and checked against the .crc file when there is one. Parts made by Total Commander work too.
Change Attributes§
⌘I changes the marked items, or the item under the cursor. Each section changes something only when its box is ticked, so you can set the date of 200 files without touching their permissions.
- Modified, Created
- Set the dates and times.
- Permissions
- Read, write and execute for owner, group and others.
- Hidden, Locked
- The Finder's hidden and locked flags.
- Tags
- Finder tags, separated by commas:
Red, Work. - Remove extended attributes
- For example
com.apple.quarantine, which makes macOS warn about files downloaded from the internet. - Also change everything inside folders
- Apply the changes to the contents of marked folders too.
On an SFTP or FTP server, ⌘I changes only the permissions. See Servers.
Code Signature§
Commands › Code Signature… shows for an app or any signed file: whether the signature is valid, who signed it (the team), whether Apple notarized it and whether it carries the quarantine flag.
Images§
Commands › Convert Images… converts the marked images into the other panel's folder:
- Format: JPEG, PNG, HEIC or TIFF.
- Longest side in pixels to scale down, or empty to keep the size.
- Quality for JPEG and HEIC.
The orientation of the photo is applied and its metadata is kept. Existing files are never replaced; new ones get a free name such as photo 2.jpg.
PDFs§
- Combine PDFs…: the marked PDFs, in the order the panel shows them, become one new PDF in the other panel's folder.
- Split PDF into Pages: the PDF under the cursor becomes one PDF per page,
name-1.pdf,name-2.pdf…, in the other panel's folder.
